The intent of the PSHE curriculum at Kings Priory School is to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils. To help and support young people prepare for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. To ensure children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives effectively. To give pupils the opportunity to explore, clarify and challenge their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, right and responsibilities in a respectful environment. To provide pupils with the skills, language and strategies to live a healthy safe life in modern Britain. These are all underpinned by the school’s values of respect, tolerance and friendship and are supported by the core skills of the school; reasoning, problem solving and presentation. PSHE is a key strand of our Personal Development curriculum and lesson appear on pupils’ timetables as such.

What does PSHE look like on the timetable?
In primary PSHE is taught as a discrete subject with dedicated curriculum time from KS1-2. In Reception it is embedded in to the Early Years framework through multiple strands. From Year 7 to Year 11 pupils have dedicated Personal Development lessons on their timetable.
Who teaches PSHE?
PSHE is taught to primary pupils by class teachers using resources provided by our PSHE leaders. At KS3-4 the subject is taught by a dedicated team drawn from the secondary teaching staff. This team is heavily weighted towards staff who have extensive experience of PSHE and/or Personal Development.
Who leads PSHE?
Mr Swinton is the overarching Curriculum Lead for PSHE and Miss McConnell supports him with this as the primary PSHE specialist. Both staff are fully qualified PSHE teachers and sit locally and nationally on relevant networks. Our PSHE classroom curriculum meets and exceeds the national curriculum for PSHE. Along with the PSHE curriculum we also have a number of special PSHE events across the year. This includes presentations by the local police liaison officer, health and external speakers including sessions on bullying and harassment and on knife crime and a Theatre in Education production based on underage alcohol use. To ensure full coverage of all statutory elements (as well as non-statutory recommendations such as economic education) we follow the PSHE Association’s recommended Programme of Study.
