Citizenship education is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding that pupils need to play a full part in democratic society as active and informed citizens. Pupils are taught about democracy, politics, parliament and voting. Additionally they will learn about human rights, justice, the law, identies and diversity. Topics such as media and information literacy, climate change and sustainability, financial and economic education and the role of the UK in the wider world are also included.
Across both Key Stage 3 & 4 our curriculum meets and exceeds the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum.
At Key Stage 3, Citizenship content is delivered as part of weekly PSHE lessons. We ensure comprehensive coverage of the required content through our adoption of the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study which provides us with a framework linked to the statutory requirements for Citizenship, as well as PSHE, Economic Education and RSE.
In Key Stage 4 the required content is covered through the PSHE content of weekly ‘Personal Development’ lessons in rotation with statutory Religious Studies. All Citizenship content is taught by highly skilled PSHE teachers who have received specialised training via North Tyneside.
In the Sixth Form, we extend our Citizenship offer into our formal Personal Development curriculum.
